Partial and full dentures are used to replace missing teeth. They can be removed and put back in your mouth as needed. Full dentures are used when all natural teeth are missing or need to be extracted. Partial dentures only replace a few missing teeth. Dentures can be tricky to get use to. When several or all teeth are removed, the underlying bone will change shape as you heal. This will affect how dentures fit, which ultimately affects how you speak and chew.
When the underlying bone has changed enough that your dentures do not fit, relining of the denture may be needed. The process of relining a denture involves taking an impression of the current state of your mouth with your denture to understand where the reline needs to take place. New material is then added to the denture. Minor relines can be done in our office while you wait. More complex relines require leaving the denture with our office for the day and can be picked up at the end of the business day.
Even though your dentures are not real teeth, they must be treated as if the are real. regular cleaning and evaluation by your dental clinician will ensure that they serve you well for a long time. Occasionally, Dr. Macaulay may need to make minor adjustments to the dentures in order for them to fit correctly. It is very important to keep them clean, as dentures can harbor harmful bacteria that can be problematic for other oral tissues.
