Cancers in the mouth are called oral cancers and oro-pharyngeal cancers. The national incidence of these cancers is steadily on the rise due to a number of different factors. These factors include environmental, hereditary, and sexual. We are proud to offer oral cancer screenings using a specialized light called a VELscope® to all our patients at their regular dental hygiene check-up appointments. These screenings are normally done every 2 years, but you may require more frequent monitoring if you are considered higher risk. Your dental hygienist is well-qualified to discuss and advise you on minimizing your oral cancer risk. Currently, treatments for oral cancer are invasive and do not cure the disease. Early detection is key to minimizing your risk for adverse diagnosis.
